Locomotor evolution in the Carnivora (Mammalia): evidence from the elbow joint

چکیده
The use of humerus distal trochlea circumference as a body mass predictor for carnivores isexplored. Trochlea circumference is found to be highly correlated with body mass in carnivores,(r2=0.952, SEE=0.136, p<0001, n=92). Scaling appears to be uniform throughout the orderCarnivora, regardless of foot posture. Some degree of differential scaling between carnivorefamilies and between animals of large and small size cannot be ruled out, but this result isinconclusive. A predictive model that allows mass predictions for a broad range of carnivoreswith a minimum of assumptions is presented. Detransformation bias is corrected by a MaximumLikelihood Estimate. Body mass for eight extinct carnivore species are calculated and thesegenerally conform to earlier mass predictions.

A Three-Dimensional Analysis of Morphological Evolution and Locomotor Performance of the Carnivoran Forelimb
In this study, three-dimensional landmark-based methods of geometric morphometrics are used for estimating the influence of phylogeny, allometry and locomotor performance on forelimb shape in living and extinct carnivorans (Mammalia, Carnivora). The main objective is to investigate morphological convergences towards similar locomotor strategies in the shape of the major forelimb bones. Results ...

The Procyonidae (Mammalia: Carnivora) have played a central role in resolving the controversial systematics of the giant and red pandas, but phylogenetic relationships of species within the family itself have received much less attention. Cladistic analyses of morphological characters conducted during the last two decades have resulted in topologies that group ecologically and morphologically s...
